Main website unavailable: maintenance page shown to visitors

  • Incident
  • major
  • Resolved

between 23:05 UTC on July 11 and 11:46 UTC on July 12, visitors to gablvm.org were shown our maintenance page instead of the website. A routine software update the previous evening did not finish cleanly and left the site in maintenance mode. For much of that window our content delivery network continued to serve saved copies of pages, so many visitors still saw the site normally, but direct visits increasingly reached the maintenance page instead. No data was lost and visitor security was never affected; the site content itself was intact throughout. Maintenance mode has been switched off, cached copies have been refreshed, and the site has been verified healthy. We are also tightening our monitoring so a stuck maintenance page is caught much sooner in the future.

Timeline

  1. update

    Jul 12, 2026, 12:10 UTC

A full post-incident analysis of this outage, covering the timeline, the root cause, the ten-hour detection gap, and the monitoring and tooling changes already in place, has been published at https://gablvm.org/articles/2026/07/twelve-hours-down-full-story-july-11-outage

  2. resolved

    11:49 UTC

This incident has been resolved. The website is confirmed to be loading normally. Direct visits could reach the maintenance page between 23:05 UTC on July 11 and 11:46 UTC on July 12; cached copies served by our content delivery network meant many visitors were unaffected for much of that window. No data was affected.

  3. monitoring

    11:46 UTC

A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results. Maintenance mode has been switched off and cached copies of pages have been refreshed. If the maintenance page still appears, reloading the page should bring the site back.

  4. identified

    11:43 UTC

The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented. The site was left in maintenance mode after a routine software update the previous evening did not complete cleanly, so visitors were shown the maintenance page rather than the website itself.

  5. investigating

    09:05 UTC

We are currently investigating an alert from our automated monitoring that the website is returning an error response instead of loading normally.
